Suppose you have taken the first pill, mifepristone, in the medical abortion process but are interested in reversing the procedure. In that case, there is a limited time frame where you can use Abortion Pill Reversal (APR) to potentially continue the pregnancy.
To learn more about this process, you can contact Lakes Life Care Center at (651)464-4340 or the Abortion Pill Rescue hotline at 877-558-0333.
How Does the Abortion Reversal Work?
The medical abortion process is a series of two different pills. The first drug, mifepristone, is an antiprogestin that works to prevent the pregnancy from receiving progesterone, a hormone required for the pregnancy to develop.
To expel the pregnancy and tissue, the second drug, misoprostol, is the second step. It is taken about 24-48 hours after mifepristone. It induces cramps to empty the uterus.
The abortion reversal protocol must occur after mifepristone but before misoprostol. The idea of abortion reversal is that promptly administering high doses of progesterone may counteract the antiprogestin effects of mifepristone and prevent the abortion from occurring.
To be most effective, APR must be administered within 72 hours after taking the first abortion pill.
What If It’s Too Late?
If you have taken the first abortion pill and are having second thoughts about going through with the abortion, reversal may be possible, but time is of the essence.
One study showed that after starting a medical abortion, up to 64% of pregnancies continued in women who chose Abortion Pill Reversal and received progesterone intramuscularly.
