If you’ve recently had a positive pregnancy test, you may be wondering how soon an ultrasound can confirm your results. It’s natural to want answers quickly, especially if this pregnancy was unexpected. An ultrasound provides important medical details that a test alone cannot.

At Lakes Life Care Center, we offer no-cost and confidential pregnancy services, including ultrasounds for those who qualify. Our team is here to help you understand what to expect and what your next steps may look like.

Schedule an appointment today to speak with us, and keep reading to learn more about when an ultrasound can provide the information you’re looking for.

When Can an Ultrasound Show a Pregnancy?

In a very early pregnancy, timing matters. The Cleveland Clinic notes that an ultrasound can detect an embryo as early as 6 weeks of gestation. However, a heartbeat may not be visible until closer to 8 weeks.

Because of this, many providers schedule the first ultrasound between 7 and 8 weeks of pregnancy. Scheduling too early may mean that very little can be seen, leading to unnecessary worry if a heartbeat is not yet detectable.

When you come in, you’ll likely be asked about the first day of your last menstrual period and when you received a positive pregnancy test. This helps estimate how far along you might be and determines the best time for imaging.

What Type of Ultrasound Is Used Early On?

During the earliest weeks of pregnancy, a transvaginal ultrasound is often recommended because it produces clearer images. This scan uses a wand-like device that is inserted into the vagina to view the uterus.

Later in pregnancy, an abdominal ultrasound will be performed. This type involves placing a transducer over the abdomen to capture images of the developing pregnancy.

Why an Ultrasound Is Important

An ultrasound does more than simply tell you whether you’re pregnant. It can:

  • Determine how far along you are
  • Confirm that the pregnancy is located in the uterus
  • Check whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing

These details are essential for protecting your health and understanding your options moving forward.
